9/9/12
Like a
thoughtful, loving husband, the first thing I did this morning was to wish my
wonderful wife a happy 34th wedding anniversary. She replied in her
kind, virtuous way: “Get out of bed. We're leaving this morning.”
We drove
from Mt Thirsty Rest Area straight to Coolgardie. It was a pleasant drive in
brilliant sunshine. It is amazing how the weather gets better the further you
go from the coast anywhere in Western Australia. Our first stop in Coolgardie
was at the best talking toilet we have found yet. The toilet paper is dispensed
electrically, music plays while you are relaxing and the soap, water and drying
air all come out when you place your hands near each. We drove to a bakery and
had the dearest but best sausage rolls ever. Then we had a walk around the main
street and visited the Visitor Information Centre, an outside mining museum,
and took photos of the beautiful old buildings that line the street.
Then we
drove a short distance to the Lindsay Pit Lookout where we could see into an
old open cut gold mine. We left Coolgardie and drove to Kalgoorlie.
The
girls choose the Prospector Caravan Park and we booked in and set up camp. In
the afternoon we drove into town and walked the main street. Again there are
plenty of wonderful old buildings to see. We drove to Mt Charlotte Lookout
which has a large water tank on top. In 1893 a water pipeline from Perth to
Kalgoorlie was constructed to supply the town with fresh drinking water. The
water is pumped 563kms and was a magnificient feat of engineering in its day.
