6/9/12
It was
still windy and raining again this morning but we decided to do the Cape Le
Grand National Park anyway. It would have been better to see it in nice
weather but I don't think they ever get nice weather here. On the way we saw a
replica of Stonehenge on a property but they were charging an admission fee so
we drove on past it. Our first stop was at Frenchman Peak lookout. It is an
amazing mountain of granite rising so high in the sky with a natural window
weathered into the top peak. Next we drove to Hellfire Bay which was a
beautiful bay with white sand on the beach. We took a walking trail over
massive granite outcrops which led to Little Hellfire Bay. The rain started
again so we had to turn back before we were turned into frozen blocks of ice.
However we did see Little Hellfire Bay from a distance. Next was Whistling Rock
and a short walk to Thistle Cove. Whistling Rock is the remains of an ancient
wave rock that has been exposed to the elements for thousands of weathering
years. We had a quick stop at Lucky Bay and then drove another 6 kilometres to
Rossiter Bay. We were disappointed to find seaweed all over the beach at
Rossiter Bay which spoilt the effect of the white sand and turquoise water. We
drove back to Lucky Bay and walked to the Matthew Flinders Monument. Flinders
sheltered in and named Lucky Bay in 1802 on his circumnavigation of Australia.
He sheltered in the bay to avoid a storm. We drove back to Hellfire Bay and had
lunch in the car before driving to the last beach which was aptly called Cape
Le Grand Beach. Again there was seaweed everywhere and it spoilt the
appearance. On the way home the girls did some shopping as we are leaving
Esperance tomorrow.
